Lower Wharfedale: Heather

11th November 2015
Learn to photograph the some of the best heather clad moorland in the Dales with local landscape photographer - Mat Robinson. With years of experience in photography and 4 years experience of teaching groups of various sizes - you couldn't be in better hands.

This workshop should be largely accessible to all - although a couple uphill walks are likely to be involved which are at least not too long. Likely locations will include Ilkley Moor, Beamsley Beacon, Embsay Crag and potentially Simon's Seat - the last of which is the most strenuous walk. So please inform me when booking if you're averse to the idea or unable to visit this spot. These workshops will be half day workshops with the option of additional tuition on the processing of the images - something many find useful as understanding layers and layer masks is a key part of my workflow.

Places will be limited to 3 people per workshop and will be aimed both at beginners - those wanting to get to grips with their camera in this beautiful scenery and learn to make the most of some amazing locations whilst they're at it - and those with a little more experience who would like some input on improving their composition and eye for an image. The workshops will be roughly 4-5 hours long, dependent on conditions, and will involve some walking - but shouldn't be too strenuous.

The cost for the workshop alone will be £99 but you're welcome to book the additional processing tutorial for a total of £125. The secondary tutorial can be taken from the comfort of your own home via Skype in the following days - and can be very useful in terms of understanding merging photos and exposures to get the best out of the photos you take on the day. Group discounts may be available too, contact me to find out.

Lower Wharfedale sits so close to the urban areas of West Yorkshire that it's often difficult to find a quiet spot at this time of year, but we will attempt to mix it up with a couple of well known and likely busy spots to begin with, before ending on a location somewhat further from the beaten track that we should have to ourselves. The colour at this time of year brings life to the scene on even the most miserable of days - but if the weather is truly horrific we can always head down to the Strid and Bolton Abbey as a backup.

You will be responsible for bringing your own lunch/snacks/drinks and insurance is not provided. If the weather is particularly bad then more time may be spent by the river rather than taking in the grand vistas, but hopefully this will be avoided. Keld and the surrounding waterfalls are hardly the worst backup plan in the world!

Rather than the group workshop, you're welcome to book this as a 1-1 tutorial on a date of your choosing. This would cost £129 for the workshop alone and £145 for the workshop plus processing tutorial.

If you'd like to book your workshop just drop me a message with your preferred date and I'll organise payment. Gift vouchers are available and come with a free greetings card.
